Giel Beelen Jazz CD Cover illustration
Giel Beelen is a well-known Dutch radio DJ. Boomerang Cards is one of the Dutch publishers of postcards. They held several ongoing design competitions in recent years, where they invited amateur and professional designers to participate. Not so much for financial gain but for the well-known 'eternal fame'. As a Freelance Illustrator I liked that, eternal fame. So I joined.

CD Cover
The competitions were not only started by Boomerang itself, but also included assignments from other companies. One of those assignments was the design of a 'Giel Jazz' CD cover. The CD contains a compilation of jazz songs, composed by the well-known Dutch radio DJ Giel Beelen.
Hand drawn in Adobe Illustrator
Authentic look
The illustration is digitally hand drawn in Adobe Illustrator. Using a Wacom tablet, then edited in Adobe Photoshop. And that was quite a challenge. Earlier I wrote about the Bunch of Weirdos project, and that I don't believe a Wacom is easy for illustrating. But in this case it gave a slightly more authentic look, so I allowed myself a little imperfection here and there.
Inspired by drawing exercise
Solid line
I was inspired by a fairly well-known exercise for people who want to learn to draw. In that exercise, the student tries to draw without lifting the pen or pencil from the paper. The entire illustration thus becomes one solid line.
Multiple parts connected by one line
Thread
The CD is a collection of Jazz songs. From different artists. In addition, Jazz can seem complex to a layman and consist of many different parts. That is why it seemed appropriate to me to connect four different instruments in one line (the line is a metaphor for the curator, Giel Beelen).
