De Koffiejongens packaging with doodle style illustration

De Koffiejongens is a Dutch seller of coffee cups. They do many things differently. More digital. And coffee on subscription, for example. More sustainable too. I'm a fan. Their cardboard packaging inspired me to draw a doodle illustration on it.

Ready for the road
As a notorious coffee lover, I have always wanted to create an illustration with a coffee theme. On an early weekday morning I prepared myself for my train journey to Amsterdam, where I did a UX/UI Design project at KPN.

I took a few new coffee cups from the cardboard packaging of the De Koffiejongens. And it struck me how little there was on the packaging. A missed opportunity if you ask me. I take a picture of the packaging with my mobile phone and put the picture on my iPad Pro. For on the road.

Authentic, raw and natural look
Cardboard has a beautiful natural color that, in combination with handmade drawings, gives a very beautiful, natural and authentic atmosphere to a packaging. Perfect for a natural product like coffee. Perfect for a young, Dutch company like De Koffiejongens.

A personal project without restrictions

With iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, headphones and audiobook
With the photo of the packaging on my iPad Pro, I got on the train. And just like every morning, as soon as the rush hour train left The Hague Central Station, I grabbed my iPad Pro, put on headphones and an audiobook and started drawing.

45 minutes
The drawing is thus built up in many different small parts, each about 45 minutes (the length of the train journey from The Hague Central Station to Amsterdam Sloterdijk). It's its own project. The Coffee Boys weren't aware of it either. So there were no restrictions. Apart from the coffee theme and packaging of course.
